Green Writers Press is honored to announce the 3rd Annual Howard Frank Mosher First Novel and Short Story Prize. Celebrated Vermont novelist Howard Frank Mosher was head of the Green Writers Press advisory board and a dear friend of the press. He also worked as an editor (gratis) on our poetry book, Last Correspondence, by Leland Kinsey. GWP published Howard's short story "Kingdom County Come" in our anthology Contemporary Vermont Fiction edited by Robin MacArthur.
This publication prize is for a novelist or short story writer who writes about Vermont and/or the themes that resonate so well with Howard's work: nature, small-town stories, love, friendship, forgiveness, Vermont, solitude, and rural life, that are part of Howard 's literary legacy. It is our hope at GWP to continue the literary, grassroots tradition of storytelling in our time that Howard loved so much. This award is especially poignant because Howard was a part of its creation before he passed away in January of 2017. The prize will be awarded annually to a writer of any age.
A percentage of the proceeds from book sales will be donated to a charity of Howard's choice in his memory. Read a NYTimes article about Howard here and most importantly, read his books, especially Northern Borders, Stranger in the Kingdom, and his short story collection Where the Rivers Flow North—just a sampling of some of our favorites.
